How to Clean Up Your Android Photo Gallery

An Android gallery fills up with four kinds of clutter: duplicates (bursts, retakes, images saved twice from chats), screenshots, blurry shots and large videos. This guide walks through removing each of them, with the free Google tools most Android phones already have and a photo cleaner app where they fall short. Menu names differ a little between phone makers, but the steps are the same.

Step 1: Check what's using your storage

Open Settings → Storage. The list shows how much space Images and Videos take. If they are near the top, this guide will win back real gigabytes; if they are small, your space is going to apps, messages or system files instead.

Step 2: Back up before deleting

Pick one:

• Google Photos: open the app, tap your profile picture and make sure backup is on. Wait until it says your photos are backed up.
• Computer backup: connect the phone with a USB cable, choose File transfer and copy the DCIM and Pictures folders to your computer.

Note: Google Photos syncs deletions. When you delete a photo inside Google Photos, both the copy on your phone and the backed-up copy go. A backup is only safe if it is a separate copy, such as the one on your computer.

Step 3: Remove exact duplicates

Files by Google, preinstalled on many phones and free on Google Play, finds duplicate files:

1. Open Files by Google → Menu → Clean.
2. On the Duplicate files card, tap Select files.
3. Keep the file marked Original, select the rest and move them to Trash.

It misses burst shots and retakes of the same scene. Picmori (free, on-device) groups burst shots taken seconds apart and opens each group side by side with a suggested shot to keep, so you keep one and let the rest go.

Step 4: Delete old screenshots

Screenshots pile up faster than anything else and are rarely needed twice. Files by Google shows an Old screenshots card in the same Clean tab. You can also open the Screenshots folder in Google Photos (Collections) or in your phone's own gallery app, select and delete.

Going through hundreds of screenshots in a grid is tedious. A swipe review, one screenshot per screen, left to delete and right to keep, is faster and harder to get wrong. Picmori's Screenshots mode, a Premium mode, brings only screenshots and saved images into the review, heaviest first.

Step 5: Clear out blurry and failed shots

Files by Google may suggest low-quality photos (blurry, too dark) in its Clean tab. If it doesn't, scroll your gallery month by month and delete failed shots as you spot them. Picmori does not detect blur, but its swipe review makes a manual pass fast.

Step 6: Review large videos

A single long video can take more space than a thousand photos. The Large files card in Files by Google lists the heaviest files first. For videos you want to keep but not carry around, copy them to a computer or cloud storage first.

Step 7: Empty the trash

Space is freed only when files leave the trash. Check each app you used:

• Google Photos: Collections → Trash (Bin on some phones) → Empty. Items are kept for 30 days otherwise.
• Files by Google: Menu → Trash → select all → Delete.
• Your phone's gallery app: Samsung Gallery and others have their own Recycle bin in the menu.

Photos you delete with Picmori on Android skip the trash: Android asks you to confirm, and then they are gone for good. That is why step 2 matters.

If your photos are safely backed up in Google Photos, profile picture → Free up space on this device removes the phone copies of everything already backed up. They stay in your Google account.
