“Tinder for Photos”

"Tinder for photos" is what people call apps that clean your camera roll one photo at a time. Each photo fills the screen and you make one quick call: swipe left to delete it, swipe right to keep it, then the next one comes up. Apps like Picmori (our app), Swipewipe, Wipix, Photo Monster and Tidy work this way.

Why a swipe beats select and delete

The usual way to clean a gallery is the grid: tap Select, tick the photos you don't want, delete. It works for screenshots, but for real photos it is hard. The thumbnails are small, similar shots look the same, and one wrong tick takes a good photo with it. A swipe app changes three things:

• One decision at a time. Each photo fills the screen, so you see the blur or the closed eyes before you decide, and you never have to judge a whole grid at once.
• Undo. Changed your mind? In apps with undo, you go back one swipe and decide again.
• Confirm at the end. In apps with a confirm step, a swipe only marks the photo. You look over what goes and confirm once, at the end, so a slip of the thumb costs nothing.

It also fits into short breaks. A few minutes with your newest photos is easier to start than a big cleanup you keep putting off.

Try it without an app first

Your phone can already show photos one at a time. On iPhone, open Photos and tap a photo to see it full screen, then swipe left or right on it to keep browsing. When one should go, tap the Trash button, then Delete Photo. It moves to the Recently Deleted album, where you can get it back for 30 days.

It is free, but every deletion takes two taps and there is no list of choices to look over at the end. On Android, Google Photos deletes from a selection instead: tap and hold a photo, select more if you like, then tap Trash. Deleted photos stay in its trash for 30 days before they are gone for good.

How to clean your camera roll by swiping, step by step

Most swipe apps work in a similar way. As a worked example, here is how it goes in Picmori.

Step 1: Back up first

Make sure your photos are backed up in iCloud Photos or Google Photos, or copied to a computer. With sync on, deleting a photo from the phone's library can also delete it from iCloud Photos or Google Photos.

Step 2: Install a swipe app

Step 3: Start a session

After a short tutorial the adventure map opens. Each chapter is a session of 25 photos built from your own gallery, such as one year, one colour or your heaviest files. The free version gives you 4 sessions a day.

Step 4: Swipe left to delete, right to keep

Look at one photo at a time. Swipe right to keep it, left to mark it for deletion, and undo if you change your mind. When a badge shows that a group of duplicates is nearby, tap it to see the copies side by side, with a suggested shot to keep, picked by resolution, file size and your favourites.

Step 5: Confirm at the end

Nothing is deleted while you swipe. At the end of the session you confirm. On iPhone and iPad, iOS asks once more and moves the photos to Recently Deleted for 30 days. On Android, the system asks you to confirm and deletes them permanently.

What to check before you choose a swipe app

• A confirm step. Look for a line on the store page saying that a swipe only marks a photo and that you confirm at the end. Picmori and Wipix say so, and Swipewipe lets you look over a month's choices before you finish.
• Where deleted photos go. On iPhone, deleted photos go to Recently Deleted for 30 days, and with iCloud Photos on, a photo deleted on one device is deleted on your other devices too. On Android it depends on the app. Google Photos keeps deleted photos in its trash for 30 days, while some cleaner apps, Picmori included, delete permanently after Android asks you to confirm.
• Ads and limits in the free version. Google Play marks apps that show ads with "Contains ads", and the App Store lists Advertising in an app's details. Look for the free limit in the description: Wipix lets you delete 50 photos a day, Picmori gives you 4 sessions of 25 photos a day.
• Privacy. You are letting the app go through your photos, so check that its store page says they stay on the phone. Picmori, Wipix, Photo Monster and Tidy say so.
• Your phone. Some swipe apps need a recent iOS: Swipewipe and Tidy need iOS 18 or later, Photo Monster iOS 18.6 or later. Picmori runs on iOS 16 or later and Android 7.0 or later.
